One of the most wonderful bands in the world came up to KXLU to play some rock music for us recently. I’ve been a fan of these kids and all their many other endeavors (too many to list/all of them fantastic) for quite some time, so it was a distinct pleasure to finally have them up to the station.

I’ve seen them rock big stages (opening for Deerhoof), little stages, no stages, and pictured above is a pool party that they played with Captain Ahab and Foot Village a couple summers ago. They are, quite simply, the best.

Check out their latest video (featuring a headbanging Josh Taylor) and you’ll see that I’m not exaggerating.

The only way to listen to the Beatles. At hyper speed! Wow. Just uncovered this gem from Steve McLaughlin called “Run For Your Life” which compresses the entire discography of The Beatles into one hour-long track of hyper bliss. Surprisingly easy to listen to.

These fine Brits stopped by KXLU right before the last show of their massive 7 week US tour. I was really excited to see them, having known Kevin and John from their previous band, PRE (and for full disclosure, Kevin’s record label Tome released Foot Village’s record “Friendship Nation” in 2008). The guys seemed super beat, so they suggested they mix it up a bit and play a set in a lighter style. I think Robin (drums) was using some kind of heavy brushes or some shit. Kevin and John were seated for the entire set. Normally I’d not be cool with that kind of thing going on, but look at these guys. They were even skinner and more depraved looking than the above photo. Like stray kittens.

Plus they still managed to totally rule. I went and saw them later that night at The Smell, where they played normally (read: much much louder) and it was quite exciting. I almost danced, which is something I am not prone to doing.

To make matters even more delightful for these poor bastards, their flight home gets canceled due to the volcano in Iceland. So they’re still stuck in LA. But I’m going to help fatten them up, on Saturday I’m going to take them to the Grilled Cheese Invitational! Exciting!

When faced with the choice between taking down all my podcasts from my privately owned website or losing my radio show, the choice was easy.

Hopefully one day KXLU will be able to allow podcasts or streams of everyone’s show. Until then…

A half spoken-word, half “We are the World” type epic ballad. Niki Rios, a 9 year old girl narrates and sings. From a cassingle (1991).

I found it on a compilation called “Celebrity PSAs” which has some terrible gems. It’s also available on a WFMU post from 2005.

Why has this song not been discovered by the masses and held up high as one of the greats of all time, I’ll never know. Please, do yourself a favor and brighten your day.

This record always makes my day. I first heard it a couple of years ago, entirely on accident. I don’t know where it came from, but there it was on my computer. Gotta love when that happens. The first track I heard was one called “I Dream of Jesus” where the narrator tells of a dream involving missing shoes, being late for work and Jesus. It’s brilliant.

In fact, each track is surprisingly brilliant. Some play out like radio dramas, some are “songs,” some are fucked up commercials/infomercial parodies.

“The Hits Keep Comin’” is one of the more annoying things to play on the radio before 7am.

I love it.

Bill Hicks is my personal Lord and Savior. Anyone not familiar with his wonderful comedic preaching should check out these live sets from Egg City Radio. That should be sufficient to blowing your mind wide open.

I love to play Bill on the radio, but his fucking foul mouth makes it difficult. I’ve taken some of my favorite bits and censored them for radio play, which I am sharing with you today.

If you’re a radio DJ, please help spread the good word. If you’re just a fan, please enjoy the bastardization that is the censoring of our great prophet. The “doesn’t Rush Limbaugh remind you of a gay guy that likes to lay in a tub while other men piss on him?” bit is pretty awesome censored.

I mean really, what’s more American than censoring a truth speaking man on public airwaves? No wonder he was murdered by our own government…

I am crazy obsessed with this song. It’s catchy as hell, gets stuck in my head all the time.

I really, really, really want to cover this song, I suppose I need to learn an instrument that makes actual music.

Fun With Animals — I don’t know anything about them other than that they put out a couple of 7″s on A&M in 1980. This is their “Test of Love and Sex” 7″ that has the song in Stereo and Mono.

I saw Ume a long time ago (2002???) and fell in love. I told the (incredibly adorable) lead singer/guitar player that she reminded me of Kurt Cobain, not sure she took that as a compliment.

They’re still around, from the looks of their website, they’re on the up and up. Fancy videos…

This is their self titled cd they gave to me at the show, I’ve been digging it ever since. Sounds like good Sonic Youth. Catchy, feedback-ridden and rockin’.

This record is crazy good. I was playing it a few weeks ago and Marty McSorley was listening and told me to post it here for him. Garage rock, 1970. Not the band The Scorpions. This is Scorpion, singular. Swedish!
